Editors Notes: The Coast with the Most
One of my fondest childhood memories of summertime is sitting on the grass at the riverfront in my hometown and watching the sky alight with dazzling explosions at the annual fireworks display. I loved the heat, the camaraderie of the crowd, the unified “oohs” and “aahs” at each new burst of colour and pattern. I loved holding hands with my parents and sharing a moment of wonder.
Staging such grand spectacles and celebrations is a way of communicating
Editor - Belinda Bruceour appreciation for our surroundings, people and history. Some events present new areas of interest or raise money for worthy causes, some challenge our athletic abilities or showcase creative talent, and others are simply about having fun in the warm weather. The West Coast in the summer is aglow with festivals and events, from outdoor theatre and concerts to sporting events and cultural celebrations. As 2008 is British Columbia’s 150th birthday, there are also many seasonal events celebrating the magnificence of our province, and it’s no surprise that Victoria, BC’s capital city, figures prominently in these festivities. In this issue of Coastlines, we assist you in “going coastal” by providing a comprehensive guide to some of the best summer activities around.
It’s a source of pride when local leisure activities also reflect shared values for ecological sustainability. Highlighting local businesses and organizations that have taken the initiative to work in tandem with the natural world, we introduce you to the golf courses on Vancouver Island that have joined the Audubon Cooperative Sanctuary Program, and also present a story about sea otter viewing on the Island’s west coast where the small furry animals can be found in abundance, thanks to their re-introduction to the area in the early seventies.
Coastlines is meant to be your companion on and off your flight, so feel free to take it with you to plan your next adventure.
